Be Your Own Boss and Finally Earn What Your Time is Worth
By Robert Palmer
Unfortunately, a lot of people feel undervalued in the workplace — whether it’s on a personal level or in the pay check. The last thing you want hanging over your head after a hard day’s work is the nagging doubt that your boss might not know how much you truly do, or the suspicion that he doesn’t really care. Worse yet, you could be doing all of this work and not getting anything extra for it.
I worked in retail for twelve years, the last six in mid-level department management. I can’t count the number of times I was asked to do things that were “above my pay grade” while I watched my boss take a two hour lunch. Worse yet, a friend of mine was “promoted” to assistant department manger only to have that department’s manager transferred elsewhere. He got stuck doing all of the functions of both jobs on an assistant’s salary … for six months.
It’s hard to find a job you like doing. It’s even harder to find a job you like doing that also pays well enough to support a family, and the economic crisis isn’t making things any easier.
So what can you do about it? Have you ever thought about working for yourself? If not, why not?
- Work when you want to.
- Work as hard as you want to.
- And write your own pay checks.
I’m not saying it would be easy money — you’d still have to work — but by being your own boss you determine how much you make by how hard you work. You could finally earn what your time was really worth.
Me, I decided I’d had enough of retail and wanted to try my hand at writing. None of the local papers would put me on their payrolls — even if I could write — because I had a degree in history, not journalism. That was when I stumbled across a book on copywriting. At the time, I didn’t even know what copywriting was. That’s where the internet really came in handy. It’s an excellent place for beginners to learn, experiment, and find out what works and what doesn’t. After a few months of my own experiments, I began to see some decent income from various projects and different clients. Soon, the pay checks became bigger, more regular, and easier to find.
When I met James Martell, a very successful publisher, internet marketer and affiliate trainer I worked with through Elance, I saw the true potential of the Internet. James will be the first to tell you that you can’t “make money” on the Internet, you have to earn it. But with that said, there’s plenty of money out there to be had.
James started eight years ago with little technological knowledge, almost no idea what to do with the internet and a burning desire to be his own boss. Now he not only earns a comfortable living online, he teaches other people how to do it as well. Some of his students have gone on to earn stellar incomes of their own through online affiliate marketing and Internet publishing.
James is truly an expert in his field and his is an amazing success story but there’s nothing special about him. He’s just a down to earth guy who likes his Tim Horton’s coffee hot and found a way to earn an impressive amount of money while working from home with his wife Arlene. If you want to see how he does it, here’s a link to an excellent video. It’s short, to the point, and really shows you how much being your own boss can improve your life, and your income.
