All too often when someone starts out new they look for keywords that have a ton of searches figuring that this is how to get traffic. The assumption is that even if you don’t get all of the traffic, you will get enough to make a decent living.
So, of they go and build a website around this keyword that has hundreds of thousands of searches a month. And … nothing! No traffic, no sales, no anything! But why?
Well, it is important to keep the following chart in mind:
Top 10 Google Spots:
Position:
1. 42.1% of clicks 421 of 1,000 visitor clicks
2. 11.9% of clicks 119 of 1,000 visitor clicks
3. 8.5% of clicks 85 of 1,000 visitor clicks
4. 6.1% of clicks 61 of 1,000 visitor clicks
5. 4.9% of clicks 49 of 1,000 visitor clicks
6. 4.1% of clicks 41 of 1,000 visitor clicks
7. 3.4% of clicks 34 of 1,000 visitor clicks
8. 3.0% of clicks 30 of 1,000 visitor clicks
9. 2.8% of clicks 28 of 1,000 visitor clicks
10. 3.0% of clicks 30 of 1,000 visitor clicks
What this tells us is the traffic we can expect based upon where we rank in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages). As you can see, if you aren’t at or near the top you will get little, if any traffic. A small amount of traffic times the average conversion rate of 2% tells you that you won’t make any money here.
So, where do you go? This is where the long-tail keywords come in. While they don’t have a ton of traffic, target enough of them, add the traffic up and all at once you have a fair amount of highly targeted traffic coming to your website.
But how do you find long tail keywords?
